This year’s RISD Alumni Holiday Sale was organized by Marilyn Yu (Sculpture ’97), Heather Phillips (Graphic Design ’10) and Melissa Small (Graphic Design ’09).

We used the leftover postcards to make ribbons for all the participating artists to wear the day of the sale.

Marilyn Yu, Owner of SHARED

SHARED is a coworking + maker space in San Francisco, located in the heart of SoMa. It is a space for creative people to work and collaborate together. SHARED is based in the belief that together we can create greater things than we could individually or in isolation.

Yu is an award-winning author, artist, and clothing designer. For nearly twenty years she has interwoven media, ideas and people in her creations. She was a pioneer in introducing sustainability to high fashion with her award-winning, hemp-based clothing line Plutonium Clothing. She is a versatile management professional with a dozen years operational experience at mission-based organizations (including a few arts organizations).

In her latest works, Yu is creating a DIY religion based on a contemporary heroine named Eva. By challenging the stagnant ideas of the dominant belief systems, Yu aims to empower people to take control of their thoughts instead of letting thoughts control them. She introduced Eva in “Relations That Suck: The Story of Eva and Dries,” a piece of art in book form that bridges the worlds of fine art, fashion, and fiction. “La Femme Fatale” is a gateway work that invites readers to have an intimate interaction with the beautiful and profound.

What You’ll Do

The cherished fermented vegetable dish of Korea, kimchi, can boost the flavors of our everyday dish, improve health, and connect you to the vegetables you eat. Wash your hands, imagine sharing delicious food with loved ones, and head out to meet kimchi expert Ellen White, owner of the acclaimed organic brand Ellen’s Kimchi. Ellen shows you the ins and outs of kimchi’s health benefits as you make your own jar, decorate it with napkin and twine, and head home with the step-by-step instructions for fermenting your veggies.

• Create a Homemade Jar of Kimchi
 Work alongside expert Ellen White with an individual kimchi kit as you make, decorate, and label your jar to bring home with you. Bring your favorite mason jars (32oz or bigger). Jars will be provided but may not be able to fill all the Kimchi you make.
• Leave with a Perfect Recipe 
Learn how to ferment your jar of kimchi just to your liking and the steps for recreating future savory masterpieces
• Light snack before you dive in You will get to taste Ellen’s Kimchi flavors before you dive in to make your own.

The experience lasts 2 hours or less. Each event is capped at 12 participants; each event requires a minimum of 4 participants in order to take place.

SF Open Studios is the oldest and largest open studios program in the country, featuring an annual, month-long art event that showcases over 900 emerging and established San Francisco artists in their studios. Each weekend, art patrons, admirers, and collectors venture out on self-guided tours to see as many SF Open Studios artists and their artworks as possible, in the hopes of finding their next true art love. The event connects collectors with artists for engaging dialogue and a glimpse into the life of the working artist; SF Open Studios simultaneously helps artists build their mailing lists, gain new admirers, and ultimately sustain a living making art.

What is veiny, stinky and alive with mold? What can you make in your own kitchen using store-bought milk and easy-to-find equipment? A beautiful piece of blue cheese! FARMcurious brings the spectacular San Francisco Milk Maid to show us a whirlwind introduction to home cheesemaking with a focus on the style of blue cheeses.

We’ll start with a vat of warm milk and wind our way over the course of three hours to something aged and robust. We’ll do plenty of sampling, of course, to make sure you know what you’re looking for in a magnificent chunk of moldy cheese.

Each participant brings home a freshly made mini wheel to grow old and moldy with. This class is a good introduction to cheesemaking or, even better, a ‘next step’ for those who’ve already made yogurt, ricotta, mozzarella or chevre.

Each writer will leave with a great sense of what they can do specifically to improve their screenplay, as well as a better awareness of where they might properly develop as a professional screenwriter as a whole. Writers benefit from the direct focus placed on their screenplays by the workshop, along with the analysis of the six other scripts.

Screenplays can be first drafts or rewrites, incomplete or partial, with first time writers and veterans all welcome. Scripts are due 10-14 days prior to the date of the workshop.

Note: Screenplays submitted to the workshop are not eligible to be entered into the BlueCat Screenplay Competition.

He has served as a panelist for the IFP Script to Screen Conference in NYC, Women in Film’s Script DC Conference in Washington, DC, and the George Eastman House Film Festival, as well as a judge for the McKnight Screenwriting Fellowships in Minnesota. Gordy Hoffman founded the BlueCat Screenplay Competition in 1998 and remains its judge. He’s currently developing a movie with Abigail Spencer.
